Congratulations to Israel on 64 Years of Independence

Posted by Sen. Reid's Staff

I congratulate Israel as it celebrates 64 years of independence today. In 1948, just minutes after independence was declared, the United States was the first nation to recognize Israel’s sovereignty. Our support for Israel has never once faltered.

I was first exposed to the State of Israel and Nevada’s vibrant Jewish community as a young man at Bonds for Israel dinners that I attended with my wife and her family. Those early experiences were formative, and I have strongly supported Israel throughout my career.

I stand with Israel, the Congress stands with Israel and America stands with Israel because our shared democratic values are one and the same. We should never forget that Israel remains threatened by terrorist groups and regimes that want to destroy it. Yet the people of Israel never tire in their commitment to democratic principles and freedoms.

I remain committed to a secure Israel, and I look forward to many more years of a U.S.-Israel partnership.

More than 100 slaves worked in treacherous conditions, in the blistering sun and freezing cold, to raise the historic building.

Yucca Mountain a relic of the past after new report
Last week, the Blue Ribbon Commission (BRC) released its final report on recommendations for managing nuclear waste in the United States. Yucca is now a relic of the past, and this report validates what I have been saying for decades: the federal government should not be in the business of forcing nuclear waste on Nevadans or anybody who does not consent to have it.
