Senator Reid Celebrates Native American Heritage Month

Posted by Sen. Reid's Staff  on 11/9/2010 - 1:29 PM

Nevada would not be where it is today without the American Indian tribes that call Nevada their home. Senator Reid understands and appreciates the impact Nevada’s first citizens have made on the state and has worked with tribes to improve life on Nevada’s reservations throughout his career.

Working together, Senator Reid and Nevada Tribes have made great strides are ensuring the preservation of Nevada’s natural environment. Recently Reid led efforts to support health care and health education programs, which provide a more complete and comprehensive understanding of health care and diabetes prevention to at-risk families. In a more personal issue for Reid, Nevada tribes have worked closely with the senator to reduce the risk of suicide for tribal youth.

“The heritage and wisdom of Nevada’s native people thrives today and is helping to write our state’s future,” said Reid. “Just this year a Nevada tribe became the first to form an agreement with a utility investing in clean power for our state. I will continue to hear their voice and work to help make First Nevadans’ lives better by ensuring that the United States honors its treaty obligations to and trust relationship with all American Indians and Alaska Natives.”
