Nevada Senator Harry Reid stood up today for Nevada law enforcement, joining them to reject the irresponsible House Republican proposal to eliminate the COPS program, a grant program that has funded more than 450 Nevada police officers and sheriffs' deputies and is crucial to keeping the state's communities safe. Reid called for responsible cuts to waste and excess, such as wasteful subsidies to big oil companies that are raking in billions in profits.

"In the Republicans' haste to make as many cuts as possible, they've proposed eliminating the COPS hiring program which has helped put hundreds of police officers and sheriffs on patrol in Nevada," Reid said. "Under the Republican plan, many could lose their jobs, and many more who want to join the force won't be able to. Those jobs are keeping us safe. So cutting COPS doesn't just put them at risk -- it puts all of us at risk."
