January 7, 2008 Washington, D.C. – After years of struggling with cost-share issues and Army Corps of Engineers delays, Washoe County, Reno-Sparks Indian Colony and Wal-Mart have agreed to construct a levee on the Truckee River, which will be a component of the Truckee River Flood Project. Today, U.S. Senator Harry Reid of Nevada delivered warm remarks at the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony Levee Project agreement signing. “On a day like today, when Fernley is filled with flood waters, we are reminded of the need to complete the Truckee Meadows Flood Control Project,” said Reid. “That’s why I was so happy to attend the signing of this agreement between Washoe County, Reno-Sparks Indian Colony and Wal-Mart for the construction of the levee. This levee is the first project feature to be built and a perfect example of what can occur with private-public partnerships.” Construction for the project is expected to begin in March.
