Reid Co-Sponsors Permanent Tax Relief Bill for Nevadans

Permanent state and local sales tax deduction will help nearly 380,000 Nevadans pay lower taxes

January 25, 2011

Washington, D.C. – Nevada Senator Harry Reid today announced that he is co-sponsoring legislation to permanently extend the deduction for state and local sales taxes.

“We need to make Nevada’s state and local sales tax deduction permanent,” said Reid.  “This bill will help create jobs and strengthen our economy by keeping more money in the pockets of hundreds of thousands of middle-class Nevadans trying to put food on the table and pay their bills.  I am eager for this legislation to become a reality.”

Reid has supported extensions of the deduction since it was reinstated in 2004.  The measure allows Nevadans, who don’t pay state income taxes, to deduct state and local sales taxes on their tax forms.  Based on 2007 IRS data, nearly 380,000 Nevadans claimed the deduction for state and local taxes.
