February 2, 2012 Washington, D.C.—Nevada Senator Harry Reid issued the following statement after the Senate approved 96-3 the Stop Trading on Congressional Knowledge (STOCK) Act: “This bipartisan legislation will ensure that members of Congress will be prosecuted if they abuse the public trust to gain financial advantage.Elected officials should play by the same rules as everyone else, and they should never use insider information to enrich themselves. “This measure is a critical step toward restoring Americans’ faith in Congress, but we need to do more. We need to show Americans we can put partisan politics aside and solve our nation’s challenges together. We need to rebuild our economy, and find common-sense solutions that put Americans back to work. We need to bring fairness to our tax code, and ensure it is not rigged to let millionaires pay lower rates than their secretaries. Today’s bill was an important step in the right direction, and I hope we can continue moving forward in the months ahead.” ###
