February 8, 2011 Washington, D.C. – Jon Summers, a spokesman for Nevada Senator Harry Reid, released the following statement today after Republicans suggested subsidies for big oil companies are off the table when it comes to spending cuts: “If Republicans are serious about cutting spending, why are they declaring tens of billions of dollars in government giveaways for big oil companies off the table? Only Republicans would defend government giveaways to their buddies at big oil companies making billions in profits – at the same time they push to slash funding for programs that help middle-class families, like financial aid for college and loans that help small businesses grow and thrive. At some point Republicans will have to stop defending special interests and get serious about working with Democrats to find common-sense solutions to cut spending and create jobs.”
