From the Senate floor this morning, Senator Reid congratulated Washoe County School District Superintendent Heath Morrison after he was named 2012 Superintendent of the Year by the American Association of School Administrators. Below are his remarks, as prepared for delivery:

M. President, it is my pleasure to congratulate Dr. Heath Morrison, superintendent of the Washoe County School District, on being named 2012 Superintendent of the Year by the American Association of School Administrators.

Since Dr. Morrison began as superintendent in 2009, he has been working hard to raise student achievement and improve the district’s graduation rate.

With the help of dedicated teachers, administrators and staff he has done just that.

From 2009 to 2011, Dr. Morrison and his team raised graduation rates by 70 percent.

His success is a testament to the impact quality educators have on student achievement and on students’ lives.

I submitted a letter of recommendation supporting Dr. Morrison's candidacy for this honor. He certainly deserves the recognition.

I look forward to continuing to work with Dr. Morrison and the Washoe County School District to help improve education for Nevada students.
