Washington, D.C. -- Nevada Senator Harry Reid issued the following statement after negotiators reached agreement on a deal to extend a middle-class tax cut, unemployment insurance and Medicare payments for physicians:

“This bipartisan agreement ensures that middle class families in Nevada and across our nation will not see their taxes go up this year. It also guarantees that hard-working Americans looking for a job in this tough economy will not have their safety net ripped out from under them, and ensures that seniors who rely Medicare will continue to be able to see their doctors. This agreement will keep us moving forward, just as our economy is gaining steam. I commend the members of the conference committee for their hard work in reaching this agreement.

“Everything should not be a fight, and I am glad that most of my Republican colleagues put the interests of the middle class ahead of politics to forge this agreement. Americans expect us to put our differences aside and find common ground. In the months ahead, I hope this shift to the middle becomes the norm, rather than the exception.”
