Reid Announces Funding to Boost Nevada’s Lowest Performing Schools

February 18, 2011

Washington, D.C. – Nevada Senator Harry Reid announced that the state will receive $3.39 million from the School Improvement Grants (SIG) program to help turn around some of our most struggling schools. The funds are part of the $3.5 billion made available to states from the Economic Recovery Act.

“In order to ensure Nevada’s workforce can compete in a 21st century global economy, we must improve Nevada’s struggling education system,” said Reid.  “These resources will help some of Nevada’s lowest-performing schools prepare our students for the jobs of the future.  I encourage Nevada school districts to apply and make use of this funding.”

The $3.39 million made available to Nevada is being distributed by formula to the state and will then be competed out by the state to school districts later this spring. In order for a school district to apply for these funds, they must have be state-identified as "persistently lowest achieving" or a Tier III school -- a school that has failed to meet adequate yearly progress for two years and is not identified as a persistently lowest achieving school.
