Reid Statement on Women’s History Month

March 2, 2009

Washington, DC – Nevada Senator Harry Reid today made the following statement in celebration of Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day.

“This month, we are reminded of the critical contributions women have made to the history of Nevada and the United States. Our rich history is filled with women who have been inventors, innovators, and leaders who helped the Silver State become what it is today.

“The past year was historic for women. We made great strides in the number of women serving in the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives. Dina Titus was elected the first female representative of Nevada’s Third District. When I entered Congress in 1983, just 24 women served. Today, 93 women from diverse backgrounds, races, creeds and countries represent well the interests of our country.

“The first bill Congress sent to President Obama was the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. Republicans and Democrats came together to ensure hardworking women get paid fairly and have an adequate chance to fight back when they are not.

“The progress of women, not only in government, but in science, engineering, sports, business and the arts should be celebrated not only this month, but every day.  It is my hope that by lifting up these leaders, we will see Nevada’s daughters, mothers, and sisters continue to shape the future of our state.”
