Washington, D.C. – Nevada Senator Harry Reid today made the following statement about “Earth Hour 2010” in Las Vegas:

“The Las Vegas Strip will join with millions of other cities and major landmarks around the globe to darken its lights in an effort to raise awareness about the importance of saving energy. Between 8:30 and 9:30pm on Saturday, March 27,most of the Strip, downtown and local casinos will turn out their marquee signs and non-essential lights. In addition to the casinos and resorts that will be dimming or shutting off their lights, many local area businesses and government agencies will participate.  The historic “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign on the south end of Las Vegas Boulevard will also be extinguished for Earth Hour.

“I thank the City of Las Vegas for coordinating this recognition of Earth Hour. Our participation in this event reaffirms Nevada’s commitment to combat global warming and climate change around the world. Energy conservation and alternative energy production are a top priority to the Silver State,and our efforts during Earth Hour are a sign that we mean business. Renewable energy that combats global warming is creating thousands of jobs, encouraging economic growth and making Nevada and the United States more energy independent. At least for this one hour, it’ll be good to see the lights out on the Strip.”
