Reid has consistently fought to keep Nevada from becoming dumping ground for out-of-state waste

Reno, NV -- Nevada Senator Harry Reid today hailed the unanimous decision by the Humboldt County Commission to reject a California company’s application for an extension of their permit to dump San Francisco’s trash near Winnemucca.  In 2009, Reid requested a U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) study to evaluate the effects of waste seepage from the proposed Jungo landfill on local groundwater, the Humboldt River, and the Rye Patch Reservoir.  Reid was critical of the results of the study and has encouraged the USGS to conduct a more complete and thorough examination of the impacts of the proposed landfill.  In December, Reid and Republican State Senator Dean Rhoads wrote a joint opinion editorial expressing bipartisan opposition to the Jungo proposal.

“The proposal to dump a mountain of California trash in Nevada is a lose-lose proposition for our state,” said Reid. “The people of Humboldt County have made it clear they don’t want other states dumping trash in their backyards, and I applaud their decision.  Like the elimination of Yucca Mountain, this is another great example of Nevadans working together to ensure that our state never becomes a dumping ground for the rest of the country.”
