Reid Denounces Health Insurance Scam Artists

April 7, 2010

Reno, NV – Nevada Senator Harry Reid todayurged Nevadans to be aware of scam artists looking to exploit the new health insurance reform law.  Recent news reports indicate that scam artists are attempting to make a quick buck by taking advantage of consumers, including senior citizens in nursing homes, by selling phony insurance policies.  Reid is calling on Nevada media outlets to help spread the word about these attempted scams and educate Nevadans on what the facts are, what to look out for and who to contact with questions or concerns.

“I am disturbed by reports of insurance fraud that targets the very people the new health insurance reform law is meant to help.  This law is intended to provide affordable health care and to eliminate waste, fraud and abuse,” said Reid. “That some of Nevada’s most vulnerable residents are being targeted is an outrage.  I urge all Nevada media outlets to help spread the word about these scams and all Nevadans to talk to your family, friends and coworkers.  By increasing awareness and looking out for each other we can stop these cowards in their tracks.”

To report scams please call the Health and Human Services Fraud Hotline at 1-800-447-8477.  For more information on health insurance reform please visit http://reid.senate.gov/issues/healthcare.cfm.
