Reid Announces $550,000+ Grant for Clean Energy Research at UNR

UNR professor’s research project aims to boost use of hydrogen made with renewable energy

April 11, 2011

Washington, DC—Nevada Senator Harry Reid today announced a $569,120 research grant for a University of Nevada-Reno professor to study metals that could support hydrogen-powered cars.  Hydrogen is a promising clean energy fuel for the transportation sector, especially when made using domestic renewable energy resources.  Dr. Katherine Li, an assistant professor in UNR’s Chemical and Materials Engineering Department, will use the funding to improve the efficiency of renewable energy production and hydrogen storage for next-generation cars.

“Clean energy means jobs for Nevadans,” said Reid.  “This research grant will help Nevada maintain its status as a major hub for clean energy production and a leader in materials research.  While Nevada already taps into solar, wind and geothermal clean energy resources to diversify our economy and create good paying jobs, renewably-produced hydrogen is the next frontier.  This extraordinary energy source not only has the potential to power our cars, but to help end our dependence on foreign oil.”

Hydrogen is expected to play an important role in meeting future transportation needs as a promising clean alternative to carbon-based fuels.  One of the key challenges to commercializing hydrogen is to develop appropriate onboard hydrogen storage systems, capable of charging and discharging large quantities of hydrogen quickly and safely enough to meet commercial requirements.  Magnesium-based nanoporous materials have the potential to greatly increase specific surface area, which is highly beneficial for hydrogen storage.
