HONG KONG, CHINA -- Nevada Senator Harry Reid recently met with students from Charles Silvestri Junior High School in his Washington, D.C. office. A dozen students were accompanied by Principal Robert Mars and Assistant Principal Jamie Gilbert as the Las Vegas junior high school made its inaugural trip to Washington.

“It was a pleasure to meet with these young Nevadans as they learn about our nation’s capital,” Reid said. “I was pleased to learn about their favorite subjects and aspirations to be authors, pilots and surgeons. I encourage them to stay involved and make their voices heard. I’ll continue to do everything in my power to ensure these children have the resources they need for a strong future.”

Silvestri Junior High School, established in 1998, is located in Las Vegas and has a student body population of just over 1,500 students. Silvestri Junior High School, “together with families and communities, strives to promote academically and socially responsible citizens.” The school has an active student body involved in student council, sports, choir and community service. Two of their community service projects include a blanket and jacket drive and a toy drive. Silvestri takes an active role through community meetings on preventing or helping reduce bullying and cyber bulling.

The students’ visit was made possible thanks to an endowment fund started by Charles Silvestri, for whom the school was named. Students from the school make the trip to Washington, DC to learn the lessons of public service and leadership.
