April 23, 2010 Washington, DC – Nevada Senator Harry Reid today made the following statement on the news that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has decided to consider the Department of Energy’s (DOE) motion to withdraw the license application for the Yucca Mountain Project, reversing the earlier decision of an NRC licensing board to wait for the Federal Court of Appeals to act first. NRC’s order directs its licensing board to issue a decision on the motion to withdraw by June 1, 2010. “I commend the NRC on their decision to move ahead in considering the motion to withdraw the Yucca Mountain license application. The Obama Administration and DOE have all the authority they need to withdraw the license application and put an end to this dangerous project. I will continue working with the President to protect Nevadans and ensure this project never comes back to life.”
