Reid Announces More Than $18 Million for Nevada's National Parks

April 24, 2009

Washington D.C.—Nevada Senator Harry Reid today announced the release of more than $18 million in funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act for improvement projects at Great Basin National Park and the Lake Mead National Recreation Area.

Great Basin National Park will receive $85,000 to repair damage to Timber Creek Trail, and for repairs to the Wheeler Peak Trail resulting in greater accessibility.

Lake Mead National Recreation Area will receive $18.2 million for a variety of projects. Solar energy panels will be installed at the park’s warehouse complex; and the preservation and rehabilitation of roads and shoreline will ensure Lake Mead is accessible for generations to come.

“I am pleased that funds from the economic recovery package will be used to help repair and restore Nevada’s national parks, preserve our state’s natural beauty, and create jobs,” Reid said. “These projects make our parks more accessible and pleasant places to visit, while employing the Nevadans who have a vested interest in making these repairs. This funding also allows the Lake Mead National Recreation Area to take advantage of our state’s abundant solar energy, creating another example of how Nevada is leading the clean energy revolution.”
