Reid Statement On Court Decision Allowing DOE To Resume Shutting Down Yucca Mountain

May 4, 2010

Washington, DC – Nevada Senator Harry Reid today made the following statement on the decision reached today by the US Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit.  The Court agreed to allow the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to complete their review of the motion to withdraw the license application for Yucca.  The Court also declined to grant an injunction that would have stopped the Department of Energy (DOE) from dismantling the Yucca project during the proceedings before the NRC and the Court.

“I am pleased that DOE’s effort to withdraw the license application is moving forward and that they will resume shutting down the Yucca Mountain Project almost immediately.  Billions of taxpayer dollars have already been wasted on this project, and today’s decision will allow DOE to cut its losses now rather than later.”
