Award is highest recognition bestowed by federal government

May 13, 2010

Washington, D.C. – Nevada Senator Harry Reid today congratulated Newmont Mining Corporation of Elko and Legacy Sports International of Reno after they were named finalists for the Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award.  Marking its 15th anniversary this year, the Freedom Award is the highest recognition given by the federal government to honor employers for their outstanding support of their employees who serve in the National Guard and the U.S. Reserve.

“I congratulate Newmont Mining Corporation and Legacy Sports International for their outstanding support for our military men and women,” Reid said.  “Our country faces challenges at home and abroad, and the preparation of our military—and the ability of its members to earn supplementary income while stationed at home—is essential to our country’s well-being. I commend these two companies for providing stable employment opportunities to the men and women serving our country.”

Newmont Mining Corporation and Legacy Sports International have been selected from more than 2,500 companies nominated nationwide and are two of 30 national finalists.  The Department of Defense will select 15 winners this summer and present the winners with an award on September 23, 2010 in Washington, D.C.
