Reid:  Geothermal Grant Further Establishes Nevada As Clean Energy Leader

May 19, 2010

Washington, D.C. – Nevada Senator Harry Reid today made the following statement after the Department of Energy awarded the University of Nevada, Reno, a $1.2-million grant to develop and operate the National Geothermal Institute, which will consist of a consortium of schools that includes MIT, Cornell, Stanford, the Oregon Institute of Technology and the University of Utah:

“The Department of Energy could not have chosen a better place for the National Geothermal Institute.  Nevada stands at the forefront of producing geothermal energy and innovating geothermal technologies, and I’m pleased that UNR will lead the way in educating and training students in this field,” Reid said.  “Geothermal energy is one of the clean energy sources that, along with solar and wind, is allowing Nevada to develop a new industry in our state that diversifies our economy, creates thousands of jobs, and protects our environment.”
