May 24, 2012

Washington, D. C.- Nevada Senator Harry Reid today announced two grants totaling $1,585,000 for nuclear technologies research and development at University of Nevada, Las Vegas. The two grants, for $790,000 and $795,000 respectively, will support research at UNLV aimed at better managing spent nuclear fuel and radioactive materials.

“I am pleased that UNLV will continue to conduct cutting edge research on nuclear technologies,” said Reid. “These investments will prepare Nevada’s aspiring scientists and engineers to lead the way improving our economy through science and innovation.”

“UNLV is very pleased to be recognized for our nuclear technology research. We extend our gratitude to Senator Reid for helping to strengthen the university’s many research endeavors,” said Neal Smatresk, president of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

The grants come from United States Department of Energy’s (DOE) Nuclear Energy University Programs and Integrated University Program. DOE announced $47 million in funding to be distributed across 143 scholarships, fellowships, research grants and university research reactor upgrades. The funding will help educate American students at 46 colleges and universities about the nuclear industry in the United States.
