Reid:  Defeated Republican Amendments Would Have Cost Nevada Jobs

May 27, 2010

Washington, DCNevada Senator Harry Reid released the following statement today after the Senate defeated the McCain, Kyl, and Cornyn amendments to the Supplemental Appropriations Act:

“Nevadans count on funding from the Recovery Act to rebuild our infrastructure, create jobs and diversify our energy choices.  It would be counterproductive to apply those funds to a temporary, piecemeal approach to our immigration challenges – especially when that same approach has proven inadequate.  That’s why I voted against the McCain, Kyl, and Cornyn amendments and why so many Senators joined me in defeating them.

“The money designated in the Recovery Act should support the jobs and programs they were intended to support.  The Recovery Act is already putting Nevadans back to work on projects that are making Nevada’s homes and businesses more energy efficient, and are making improvements to Nevada’s roads and transportation infrastructure.  That’s only the tip of the iceberg – Nevadans will continue to see tangible progress because of the Recovery Act, and I am committed to protecting these important funds.

“We need to secure our border, and I support President Obama’s plan to do that as part of a comprehensive immigration solution.  But we cannot put millions of jobs in Nevada and across America at risk.”
