Reid Statement On The Anniversary Of D-Day

June 5, 2009

Washington, D.C.  -- Senator Harry Reid made the following statement  in honor of the 65th anniversary of the D-Day Invasion on Saturday, June 6th:

“Today, we mark the anniversary of an extraordinary occasion of bravery.  On this day 65 years ago, thousands of Americans helped break the forces of the enemy to turn the tides of World War II. The Allied forces, in an enormous military undertaking, kept the forces of hate from advancing in Europe. Many gave their lives on this momentous day, sacrifices which we will never forget. Others fought courageously and then came home to form the backbone of a generation in America.

“We commemorate this decisive battle and honor the sacrifice and selfless work of those who continue to fight for their nation. D-Day embodies the will of America – our commitment to our allies, our commitment to the protection of peace in the world. The men and women of our military are part of this powerful legacy. They serve in the same volunteer force that served our allies in Europe 65 years ago. The valor shown on the beaches of Normandy lives on in their example of service to country and to the enduring cause of freedom.”
