Washington, D.C.–Nevada Senator Harry Reid released the following statement on the May employment report. According to the Labor Department, 175,000 jobs were added in April:
“Our economy is continuing to add jobs, but not as quickly as it should. Republican austerity policies are acting as a brake against a faster and more robust recovery.
“This week we could have acted to prevent college student loans from doubling and adding to the heavy financial loads middle class families already carry, but Republicans decided to block this common-sense solution. Imposing more burdens on the middle class is not the way to grow our economy, and I hope my Republican colleagues change their minds before the rates double in July. Republicans should also work with Democrats to replace the sequester with a balanced solution that combines smart cuts with revenue measures that close tax loopholes benefiting the wealthiest Americans. A balanced plan is the way to fund investment in our economy, and in our people to stimulate the job growth we need. It's time for Republicans to finally start cooperating and stop playing political games with middle-class families' economic security."
