Reid Announces $170,000 To Help Homeless Veterans In Nevada

75 homeless veterans to find employment through reintegration program

June 22, 2010

Washington, D.C.— Nevada Senator Harry Reid today announced that the United States Veterans Initiative (U.S. VETS) in Las Vegas will receive a $170,000  grant from the U.S. Department of Labor’s Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program (HVRP) that will enroll 100 homeless veterans and place at least 75 of them into jobs.  The program provides job training to help veterans succeed in civilian careers.

“We must continue to do everything we can for our veterans because they have made so many sacrifices for our country,” Reid said.  “This program will make it easier for veterans to transition back to civilian life and find meaningful employment opportunities through job training.  No veteran should ever be homeless.  I thank Labor Secretary Hilda Soldis for recognizing Nevada’s veterans with this grant.”

U.S. VETS is a non-profit organization in Las Vegas whose mission is the successful transition of military veterans and their families through the provision of housing, counseling, career development and comprehensive support.  Since the organization’s inception in Las Vegas in 2001, nearly 4,000 veterans have been served within the “Veterans in Progress” program which provides veterans with housing and support including meals, clothing, outreach services, and employment assistance.  In 2009 alone, the organization helped 191 veterans return to permanent employment.
