Reid Announces Extension of PILT, Secure Rural Schools Funding For Nevada Counties

July 9, 2012

Washington, D.C. – Nevada Senator Harry Reid today announced that the Senate has passed legislation that extends Payment in Lieu of Taxes (PILT) for one year and restores Secure Rural Schools (SRS) funding through FY 2012. PILT was set to expire at the end of FY 2012 and SRS expired last year. This bill has been signed into law by President Obama.

“PILT and SRS funding makes a big difference for Nevada communities,” Reid said. “These funds will help rural communities across Nevada support a high quality education system for all children, and other crucial services like law enforcement and healthcare. I have worked hard to make sure that these crucial programs are fully funded, and I am pleased that the Senate has taken action to extend these provisions so all Nevadans can have opportunities to flourish.”

The recently passed measure is based on bipartisan legislation (S. 1692, the County Payments Reauthorization Act) that Reid co-sponsored last year. PILT was set to expire in September 2012 and the legislation passed today extends it through September 2013.  SRS expired in September 2011, and now will be extended through September 2012. Under the agreement Reid led in 2008, Nevada’s SRS county payments rose from $407,000 in Fiscal Year 2007 to $4.5 million in FY 2011, and its PILT payments went from $13.8 million to nearly $23 million.
