Reid Announces $7.5 Million for Reno-Tahoe Airport Improvements

September 1, 2011

Las Vegas, NV – Nevada Senator Harry Reid today announced two grants totaling $7.5 million to reduce noise and improve safety at Reno-Tahoe International Airport.

“I’m pleased that Nevadans will be back on the job increasing the safety of travelers and improving the quality of life for Nevadans as a result of these grants,” Reid said. “These upgrades will ensure the airport can support the many visitors who contribute to our economy by spending money in Northern Nevada."

The two Department of Transportation grants consist of a $4.6 million grant that will allow for measures mitigating noise pollution for nearby residents and a $2.9 million grant that will go towards extending the taxiway, increasing safety, and enhancing the airport’s infrastructure.

BACKGROUND

In June, Reid announced $4.2 million for noise reduction and repairs at Reno-Tahoe International Airport.

Last October, Reid cut the ribbon on an air traffic control tower that create 140 local jobs at Reno-Tahoe International Airport to further accommodate increased traffic to Lake Tahoe, Reno and other attractions in Northern Nevada.

Senator Reid led passage of the Travel Promotion Act in 2010 to boost Nevada’s economy by attracting more tourists to the Silver State.
