Reid Announces $1.2 Million for University of Nevada

Funds headed to Desert Research Institute and University of Nevada Reno for environmental research and intelligent computing system

September 15, 2009

Washington, D.C. — Nevada Senator Harry Reid today announced more than $1.2 million in economic recovery funding to support the development of state of the art scientific infrastructure in Nevada universities. Two awards from the National Science Foundation will support the development of a real-time atmospheric mercury sensor at the Desert Research Institute (DRI) and the creation of an intelligent computer system at University of Nevada Reno.

“This money will allow the University of Nevada researchers to detect toxins in Nevada’s air, lakes and streams, with more accuracy, as well as analyze complex scientific data in a more efficient manner,” Reid said. “I’m pleased that we are investing the funds necessary to strengthen the science and technology infrastructure in our state’s universities, while creating jobs and putting Nevadans to work.”
