Reid Announces Nearly $600,000 To Keep At-Risk Nevada Children Free From Home Hazards

UNLV program will reduce asthma, lead poisoning among Nevada children

September 15, 2011

Washington, D.C. – Nevada Senator Harry Reid today announced a $591,697grant for a University of Nevada-Las Vegas program that identifies and treats hazards in the homes of at-risk children.  UNLV’s “Health Homes and Lead Poisoning Prevention Program (HHLPPP),” in partnership with several additional organizations, will focus on addressing housing hazards at homes in Clark County, Washoe County and Carson City to eliminate risks to children.

“This program will improve the health of Nevada children and prevent them from getting sick,” Reid said.  “A child’s home should be a safe place where they aren’t at risk of becoming sick from lead or other toxins.  I’m pleased that UNLV will be leading the effort to make Nevada homes safer for our children.”

According to the Center for Disease Control, “the purpose of the HHLPPP is to reduce or eliminate housing-related health hazards and to promote housing that is healthy, safe, affordable, and accessible. This program will address multiple hazards in homes and prevent diseases and/or injuries that result from housing-related hazards. Priority hazards, diseases and conditions, and high-risk populations should be determined based on programmatic data and other data sources (i.e. census, hospital admissions, or building/sanitary code violations by address). Special emphasis should be placed on populations who suffer disproportionately from housing-related disease.”
