Reid Announces $3.5 Million For Million Hearts Campaign

September 15, 2011

Washington, D.C. – Nevada Senator Harry Reid today announced that Nevada will receive $3,565,311 through 2015 as part of The Million Hearts campaign. Heart disease costs $444 billion every year in medical costs, constituting 17 percent of overall national health spending. Launched by the Department of Health and Human Services, The Million Hearts campaign aims to prevent one million heart attacks and strokes over the next five years through improved quality and prevention efforts.

“Nevadans continue to see the benefits of health insurance reform,” said Reid. “The Million Hearts campaign is the latest example of this, a public-private partnership that improves care and empowers Nevadans to make healthy choices. It is important we do everything we can to combat heart disease.”

Nevada is one of 10 states to receive this grant, which is funded through a provision in the Affordable Care Act encouraging states to offer incentives to Medicaid enrollees who adopt healthy behaviors such as quitting smoking or losing weight.

The Million Hearts campaign is a public-private partnership that focuses on improving aspirin use; blood pressure and cholesterol control; and tobacco prevention.
