September 15, 2011 Washington, D.C. – Nevada Senator Harry Reid today announced that McCarran Airport has received a $7,449,845 million grant to improve the safety of Nevada’s largest airport by rehabilitating its apron. “This investment will put Nevadans back to work ensuring that McCarran Airport can support all passengers travelling to and from the world’s premier tourist destination,” Reid said. “Nevada’s airports are crucial to our state’s economic recovery and these resources will ensure the reliability of McCarran for years to come.” BACKGROUND: In May, Senator Reid broke ground on a new, state-of-the-art air traffic control tower at McCarran International Airport. This project will create hundreds of good-paying jobs for Nevadans. Senator Reid was successful in including a provision in the Recovery Act that allowed McCarran Airport to refinance the bonds supporting the Terminal 3 project at a lower interest rate, saving the airport nearly $100 million in interest costs. Senator Reid led passage of the Travel Promotion Act in 2010 in order to boost Nevada’s economy by attracting more tourists to the Silver State.
