Reid Announces More Than $1.7 Million For Veterans Housing

June 2, 2010

Las Vegas, NV—Nevada Senator Harry Reid today announced that the Department of Housing and Urban Development has awarded more than $1.7 million dollars to help homeless veterans in Nevada.  As part of the Veterans Affairs Support Housing program, the City of Reno Housing Authority will receive $316,620 and the Southern Nevada Regional Housing Agency will receive $1,448,136 to provide vouchers for rental assistance to homeless veterans.

“We must take care of our veterans in Nevada and across America who have fought so hard to protect freedom for our country,” Reid said.  “No veteran should ever be homeless.  These funding awards will help us work towards a day when that becomes a reality.”

Reid has a track record of securing funding and passing legislation that directly helps Nevada’s veterans, such as securing more than $600 million for the new Veterans Hospital in Southern Nevada.  The state-of-the-art facility will provide services in surgery, mental health, rehabilitation, and long-term care.  Through The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, Reid directed $5.5 million to the Ioannis A. Lougaris VA Medical Center in Reno for renovations, improved care, and the creation of jobs earlier this year.
