Checks helping seniors who have reached the doughnut hole

August 10, 2010

Las Vegas, NV—Nevada Senator Harry Reid today announced the third round of $250 Medicare rebate checks have been mailed to Nevada seniors who have reached the prescription-drug doughnut hole. Nearly 5,000 Nevada seniors have received these tax-free checks that cover the coverage gap that more than 25 percent of seniors reach while on a prescription drug regimen. These checks will work to partly close the doughnut hole this year. Next year the health reform law will take additional steps by offering seniors 50 percent discount on their brand name medications.

“This third round of funding will make a difference for seniors in Nevada who otherwise would have to pay the full cost of their medication out of their own pocket,” said Reid. “As we close the doughnut hole, this funding will help seniors avoid having to choose between skipping pills or cutting them in half to save money.  By helping Nevada seniors now and taking steps to fully close the gap, we are building a stronger Medicare and giving more seniors improved security in their health care.”
