Reid Announces $300,000 For Juvenile Drug Court Mentoring Initiatives

September 14, 2010

Washington, D.C.—Nevada Senator Harry Reid today announced that the U.S. Department of Justice has awarded $300,000 to the Washoe County District Court as part of the 2010 Juvenile Drug Courts and Mentoring Initiative.  The Juvenile Drug Court is partnering with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northern Nevada to collaborate to provide mentoring services for youth involved in the drug court system. The partnership will help young offenders ages 12- 17 receive a mentor and guidance as a part of the court. The Affirm Mentoring Program helps involve the community in helping young drug offenders stay in school and avoid recidivism.

“Growing up I had many mentors, like Governor Mike O’Callahan, who helped guide me to become the person I am today,” said Reid. “I thank Judge Frances Doherty for her careful administration of this program.  I am glad the Department of Justice has recognized the ongoing efforts of Big Brothers Big Sisters in helping the Juvenile Drug Court fulfill its duty of administering justice while helping young people recover from addiction and move past criminal activity.”
