Washington, D.C.— Nevada Senator Harry Reid released the following statement this evening after Republicans blocked legislation that would preserve unemployment benefits for millions of Americans:
“In the middle of the holiday season, Republicans are yanking the safety net out from under millions of Nevadans and Americans who are continuing to look for work in this difficult economy. At the same time that they deny assistance for out-of-work Americans, Republicans are pushing for more tax breaks for millionaires and CEOs who send American jobs overseas.
“Small businesses and economists believe that extending unemployment insurance is smart policy that will help boost our economy. The money gets spent, generating economic activity and helping create jobs. But that appears to be lost on my Republican colleagues, who would rather focus on passing massive tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans at the expense of everything else.”
