Reid: Unemployment Rate a Reminder of the Challenges We Face

November 7, 2008

Washington, DCNevada Senator Harry Reid made the following statement today in response to the Labor Department's report that the nation's unemployment rate has reached a 14-year high of 6.5 percent:

"As we celebrate the victory of President-elect Obama, this news that the unemployment rate has reached a 14-year high of 6.5 percent is the latest reminder of the many challenges confronting our nation.

"We have lost a staggering 1.2 million jobs this year alone, leaving more than 10 million Americans unemployed. This, coupled with the increased cost of living and a continuing housing and financial crisis, has left many Americans struggling to make ends meet.

"Last Tuesday, Americans called for change. We have a lot of work to do to reverse the failed policies of the Bush Administration. This is a new chapter for our nation, and I am looking forward to working with my Democratic and Republican colleagues in Congress and President-elect Obama to return this nation to an era of increased prosperity for all Americans.

"We must work to reinvigorate our economy, and we can start by passing an economic recovery package this year that will put the needs of working families first. It is my hope that President Bush and Republicans will join us to help get our economy back on track."
