Reid Applauds Historic Solar Power Announcement For Military Housing In Nevada

Rooftop solar panels to help Nellis AFB, NAS Fallon meet energy needs at lower cost

November 30, 2011

Washington, D.C. – Nevada Senator Harry Reid today applauded a new residential solar project that will install more than four megawatts of solar photovoltaic panels on 1,400 housing units at Nellis Air Force Base (AFB) and Naval Air Station (NAS) Fallon.  The project, known as SolarStrong, is a privately-financed nationwide venture that will build more than $1 billion in solar projects on as many as 120,000 military housing communities. The project is expected to be the largest residential photovoltaic solar project in U.S. history.

“I applaud this innovative project that will create jobs and continue to move Nevada’s and the nation’s clean energy industry forward,” Reid said.  “This project will allow Nellis and Fallon to meet more of its energy needs at a lower cost by harnessing Nevada’s abundant solar energy resources, and it’s another positive step in our efforts to reduce our dependence on polluting sources of energy.”

SolarCity, a solar provider operating projects around the country, announced the financing agreement today with Bank of America Merrill Lynch.  In Nevada, a total of 1408 housing units will generate 4.2 megawatts of energy.  At Nellis Air Force Base, 1178 units generating 3.5 megawatts will be built; 230 units producing 0.7 megawatts will be installed at NAS Fallon.
