Washington, D.C.—Nevada Senator Harry Reid made the following statement on the first night of Hanukkah:

“Tonight, families and friends will gather and kindle the lights of the hannukiyah in celebration of Hanukkah’s first night. In the week ahead, each space on the hannukiyah- one for each night of the holiday’s eight nights- will be lit to recognize the miracle of light, a symbol of strength and fortitude in the face of peril. In each generation, hope and persistence give individuals strength during times of struggle and adversity. The story of Hanukkah reminds us of those important themes.

“That lesson holds true now. As we face new challenges we must remember we aren’t facing them alone. We can all draw strength from the support of our loved ones to forge new, better paths forward. This holiday is an important opportunity for families, friends, and communities to rejoice with one another and I wish everyone celebrating Hanukkah a Chag Sameach. In the evenings ahead, may the lights of the hannukiyah shine as brightly as our future.”
