Reid Statement on Senator McCain Calling Social Security 'An Absolute Disgrace'

July 10, 2008

Washington, DC—Nevada Senator Harry Reid made the following statement today in response to Senator John McCain’s remarks deriding Social Security:

“Senator McCain’s recent statements suggest that he wants nothing less than to end Social Security as we know it.  Senator McCain says it’s ‘an absolute disgrace’ that today’s workers are supporting today’s retirees – in his words, ‘That’s why it’s broken.”  Yet this is how Social Security was designed to work.  Social Security asks workers to contribute today in return for a promise that they can retire in dignity.  Breaking that promise by privatizing Social Security is what would be an absolute disgrace.”
