Reid, Ensign Introduce Land Bill For Elko

Legislation will create motocross and stock car racing area and expand tribal land

March 25, 2010

Washington, D.C. – Nevada Senators Harry Reid and John Ensign today introduced legislation to secure federal land for the residents of Elko County. The Elko Motocross and Tribal Conveyance Act would give approximately 300 acres of land managed by the Bureau of Land Management to Elko County.  This conveyance will clear the way for the construction of a BMX, motocross, off-highway vehicle, and stock car racing area for the benefit of people all across northeastern Nevada.  The new Motocross Park will provide an economic boon to the City of Elko and a safe place for people of all ages to learn and enjoy motorsports.

The bill would also direct the Secretary of the Interior to take approximately 370 acres into trust for the Te-Moak Tribe of Western Shoshone Indians.  This effort has the support of the Tribe, the City of Elko and Elko County.  The land will be used for housing, cultural activities and other vital purposes. The legislation carries a special provision to protect the City of Elko’s rights-of-way across the lands that would held in trust for the tribe.

“This bill will provide critical opportunities for growth and economic development in northeastern Nevada,” said Reid.  “The people of Elko County have put a lot of time and work into this proposal.  I am proud to be working with them on initiatives that will bolster Elko’s economy.”

“This bill would add yet another reason to the long list of why Nevada is the perfect place to work and live,” Ensign said. “This land is perfect for OHV use, including motocross and stock car racing. Elko County will certainly benefit from an expanded facility that attracts off-highway vehicle enthusiasts; giving a much needed boost to northeastern Nevada’s economy.”
