March 1, 2011 Washington, DC—Nevada Senator Harry Reid today introduced the Sloan Hills Withdrawal Act to put an end to the proposed Sloan Hills gravel pit near Henderson that threatens the health and safety of local residents. “The Sloan Hills gravel pit not only disturbs an otherwise peaceful community, but poses serious health risks to thousands of Nevada residents,” said Reid. “By blasting and crushing rock and gravel twenty-four hours a day, every day for 30 years, this ill-conceived project would cause unsafe and unwanted air and noise pollution for the Henderson community. After hearing from thousands of Nevadans, I’ve introduced this legislation to put an end to the proposed gravel pit once and for all.” Senator Reid’s bill would stop development of the proposed 640-acre gravel pit by withdrawing the area from mining. Were the project to continue, the resulting mine would blast rock, crush gravel, kick up dust and consume precious water resources up to twenty-four hours a day, every day, for 30 years—all of which would occur just a stone’s throw away from Henderson neighborhoods. Reid has heard from thousands of Clark County residents who are concerned that the project would severely affect their home values, their health and their overall quality of life. Reid is committed to protecting their welfare by blocking the Sloan Hills proposed gravel pit. Click here for the link to the map of the area detailing the parcel that will be withdrawn. ###
