January 18, 2013 Searchlight, NV- Nevada Senator Harry Reid issued the following statement after Nevada’s unemployment rate decreased from 10.8 percent to 10.2 percent in December: “I am encouraged that Nevada’s economy continues to move in the right direction. However, for those in Nevada and across the nation who are still unemployed, the recovery will not be a shared reality until they start earning a paycheck again. We must stay focused on creating jobs and strengthening our state’s middle class to maintain this positive momentum. “Moving forward in our recovery is within our power so it’s a shame that Republicans are threatening to again hold the full faith and credit of the United States hostage in order to force cuts to Social Security and Medicare. Middle class Nevadans and Americans rely on these crucial programs and it is unacceptable to put their livelihoods in jeopardy. “We can continue forging a path toward long-term economic success by avoiding another knock-down, drag-out fight over whether to default, or to pay our nation's existing bills. If our recovery is to take off, Republicans needs to forgo brinksmanship and work with Democrats on what matters most- creating jobs and protecting middle class Americans.” ###
