Reid Remarks On The Koch Brothers’ Attempt To Buy America

“One of their puppet organizations is running commercials against me in my home state of Nevada. They must not know that I’m not up for re-election for a few more years.”

“The Koch brothers are trying to use their immense wealth to buy their way around the laws and regulations of this nation to make themselves even richer. Because for them, being fourth and fifth on the list of the world’s richest people just isn’t enough.”

“The Ryan budget is a blueprint for, how would you say this, modern ‘Koch-topia.’ In fact, we might as well call it the Koch budget.”

Washington, D.C.Nevada Senator Harry Reid spoke on the Senate floor today regarding the Koch brothers’ efforts to influence democracy in Nevada and around the nation.  Below are his remarks as prepared for delivery:

Yesterday as I went about my business here in the Senate I was informed that the Koch brothers were at it again. We know they’re always at it, but now they’re at it in Nevada. One of their puppet organizations is running commercials against me in my home state of Nevada. They must not know that I’m not up for re-election for a few more years.  The issue they raise in those ads? That by criticizing the Koch brothers’ attempts to buy America,  I have attacked their freedom of speech. The gall of these men is truly staggering.  These two mogul billionaires are so eager to force their will on the American people that they’ll even do it even in the face of their own hypocrisy. I began to think April Fool’s arrived a day early. It is a fool’s errand for the Koch brothers to think they can use their money to brainwash Nevadans or others across the country. The people of this nation trace their freedom of speech back to the Constitution  not a bank account balance with a lot of zeroes at the end.

The Koch brothers are trying to use their immense wealth to buy their way around the laws and regulations of this nation to make themselves even richer. Because for them, being fourth and fifth on the list of the world’s richest people just isn’t enough. Here’s the rules they want to play by: They should be allowed to say false and misleading things about Obamacare, but we’re not allowed to criticize them for it.

I have been proud, along with my democrat colleagues here in the Senate, to take a stand up to these moguls and their misleading, fear-mongering ways. So it should come as no surprise that these oil barons have commissioned one of their many organizations to go on the attack in Nevada. I understand that they’ve set aside $30,000 to attack me. Let them spend $300,00 In Nevada – I don’t care. It’s worth noting that this particular marionette-of-an-organization, American Encore, was previously called “The Center to Protect Patients’ Rights.” Evidently they decided that running ads against me is more important than protecting patients’ rights. No matter what they may call their myriad organizations  they all have one stated purpose – to make these barons even richer. If you need further proof, take a look at the legislation that they have influenced with their means.

In recent years, the tea-party driven House of Representatives has never missed a chance to funnel more tax cuts to the wealthy by raising taxes on the middle class. Specifically, the budget proposals drafted by House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, former candidate for Vice President, have been especially appalling. The Ryan budget is a blueprint for, how would you say this, modern “Koch-topia.” In fact, we might as well call it the Koch budget. These proposals, fascinatingly titled “The Path to Prosperity,” have sought to end Medicare as we know it  slash education funding  while expanding tax loopholes for the mega-rich.  Whose prosperity was being plotted in those schemes?

Today, as we get a closer look at the new Ryan budget we will have to see how much of the Koch brothers’ agenda is reflected in this year’s reboot. You don’t have to be a fortune teller to know the similarities will be extensive. So to any and all groups who wish to attack me on behalf of multi-billionaires, I say ‘fire away.’ I am proud to be the target of your attacks, and will gladly endure them in order to call attention to the unscrupulous acts of these two barons. But don’t expect Americans to go along with your attempt to rig our democracy and hand it over to a couple of power-hungry tycoons  The country will be watching,  but not fooled  by the Koch brothers’ attempts to purchase influence.

And who is that influence for? The Koch brothers.
