Reid Remarks On Passage Of Emergency Funding For Israel’s Iron Dome Defense System

“I am glad that we have been able to respond to Secretary Hagel’s request for $225 million in emergency funding so that Israel can replenish the Iron Dome system.”

“I regret that Republican Senators rebuffed our consent requests on Iron Dome 3 times last night. But we fought for what’s right and passed the bill.”

Washington, DC – Nevada Senator Harry Reid spoke on the Senate floor today on the passage of $225 million in emergency funding to Israel for its Iron Dome defense system. Below are his remarks as prepared for delivery:

I am gratified that we were able to reach this agreement to help address the urgent needs of our ally Israel to defend itself.

Just today, we learned that two Israeli soldiers were killed, and another was apparently kidnapped, after terrorists used their tunnel system to attack Israel. Hamas has barraged Israel with thousands of rockets, indiscriminately firing at innocent civilians. Israel depends on Iron Dome to protect its people.

I am glad that we have been able to respond to Secretary Hagel’s request for $225 million in emergency funding so that Israel can replenish the Iron Dome system. And I am gratified that the Senate has recognized this for the true emergency that it is.

I regret that Republican Senators rebuffed our consent requests on Iron Dome 3 times last night. But we fought for what’s right and passed the bill. And sometimes when you keep working, you can eventually get something done. I hope that we might eventually be able to pass other parts of Senator Mikulski’s supplemental appropriations bill before long.
