Washington, D.C. – Nevada Senator Harry Reid issued the following statement on the January employment report. According to the Labor Department, the economy added 113,000 jobs in January:
“While our economy has added 8.5 million jobs with 47 consecutive months of job growth, the recovery will not be real for people in Nevada and across the country until they can find a good job and economic security for their families. Right now, there are 1.7 million Americans, including nearly 22,000 Nevadans, who have seen their lifeline cut off by a Republican filibuster of unemployment insurance.
“We are one Republican vote away from restoring the lifeline for these Americans who have lost work through no fault of their own – Americans like the 57 year-old Nevada woman who wrote to tell me she first learned the definition of ‘couch surfing’ when she was forced to sell most of her possessions and stay with friends while she continues to look for a job. She has been working since she was 18 and she had played by the rules her whole life. It is time that we in Washington kept faith with her and the other 1.7 million Americans like her by ending the Republican filibuster and extending unemployment insurance. Not only does this insurance help Americans like her, but almost 250,000 current jobs depend on the economic activity generated when those unemployment checks are put back into our economy.
“Every Democrat supports this bill, we just need one more Republican to join us.”
