Reid Remarks Calling On Senate Republicans To End Obstruction Of Qualified Nominees

“For months, the Department of Justice’s law enforcement nominees have been obstructed by Senate Republicans.”

“These U.S. attorneys are our nation’s top prosecutors for federal crimes, including tax evasion, wire fraud, or drug trafficking.”

“I call upon Senate Republicans to end their obstruction of these nominees, and give our nation’s law enforcement all the tools they need in protecting us.”

Washington, DC – Nevada Senator Harry Reid spoke on the Senate floor regarding Republicans’ continued obstruction of nominees and the reckless hindrance stalling confirmations presents to our government. Below are his remarks as prepared for delivery:

Just last week our nation celebrated National Police Week – a time to express our appreciation for the crime-fighting men and women who protect our families every day.  But while the rest of America honored our nation’s police officers, the United States Senate failed to do its part in supporting law enforcement. For months, the Department of Justice’s law enforcement nominees have been obstructed by Senate Republicans.  Among the list of nominees stalled by Senate Republicans are three U.S. Attorneys, responsible for prosecuting federal crimes in Connecticut, Louisiana and New Mexico.

These U.S. attorneys are our nation’s top prosecutors for federal crimes, including tax evasion, wire fraud, or drug trafficking. Additionally, the nominations of two Assistant Attorneys General continue to languish inexplicably. Don’t we think it’s important to confirm the Assistant Attorney General for Legislative Affairs, who is responsible for working with Congress to enforce federal law? How about the Assistant Attorney General for the Environment and Natural Resources Division? Shouldn’t our nation’s top environmental cop receive a confirmation vote on the Senate floor?

he United States Department of Justice is the crime-fighting wing of our government. Why should its work be handcuffed by the United States Senate? It is unfathomable that the work of Attorney General Eric Holder and his department is being recklessly hindered by Republican obstruction. I call upon Senate Republicans to end their obstruction of these nominees, and give our nation’s law enforcement all the tools they need in protecting us.
