Washington, DC – Nevada Senator Harry Reid issued the following statement today after the Senate confirmed Robert McDonald as the next Secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) by a unanimous vote. Earlier this month, Senator Reid met with Secretary McDonald to discuss his concerns over mismanagement at VA health facilities in Nevada and throughout the country:
“The Senate has taken a strong step toward getting the VA on the right track. As a respected graduate of West Point, and through his tenure as CEO of Proctor and Gamble, Robert McDonald has proven himself as a soldier and a respected business leader.
“While I am hopeful that Secretary McDonald will act quickly to fix the situation at the VA, a change of leadership alone will not solve the systemic problems within the agency. Congress will soon pass legislation to provide emergency funding to address these problems and I will work very closely with Secretary McDonald to ensure that veterans are able to access and receive quality health care. And I will make certain that VA facilities in Nevada are strengthened. It is my hope that under Secretary McDonald’s leadership at the VA, our veterans in Nevada, and nationwide, will once again have confidence that their government will provide them with the care they have earned.”
