Reno, NV – Nevada Senator Harry Reid today presented Sparks resident Robert McBride with his Purple Heart in a morning ceremony.
McBride enlisted in the Army in 1966 and went to Vietnam in 1967. He served as a Specialist Fourth Grade in C Company, 554th Engineer Battalion. McBride’s group came under frequent mortar attack, usually during the night. In January 1968, a mortar attack near Cu Chi, Vietnam, left McBride with first and second-degree burns to his left shoulder and right foot. These injuries, however, were not documented on McBride’s discharge papers in June 1968, not properly recognizing him for the combat wounds he sustained in service of the country.
With Reid’s assistance, this error has been corrected and McBride will now receive the recognition he earned. He will also be eligible for better care for his injuries at Veterans Administration medical facilities.
“I commend Robert McBride for his service to our country,” Reid said. “We must always make sure our veterans receive all the benefits they have earned.”
