Washington, D.C. – Nevada Senator Harry Reid released the following statement on the Department of Energy’s plan to ship Edison Uranium Solidification Project canisters at the Nevada National Security Site . The Governor’s office and the Nevada delegation have been in constant contact and worked closely on this matter:

“The delegation has worked closely with state officials to try and resolve this matter while ensuring the safety of Nevadans. I am concerned about recent developments related to plans to dispose of the Consolidated Edison Uranium Solidification Project (CEUSP) canisters at the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS). Nevada must receive assurances that the canisters are safe to ship, will not release dangerous levels of radiation into the environment, and waste acceptance standards for NNSS are not being modified solely to accommodate this waste. With the information I have today, I will not support the transportation of these canisters. The Nevada delegation has a long history of working collaboratively with the State to ensure Nevadans are protected. We will continue that approach as we work towards a resolution to this matter.”
